Nathan's second stay at Hospital 21 was for nearly six weeks. His complaint this time: orchitis, an infection of the testicles and the nearby lymph nodes. His right testicle had swollen to the size of a baseball. It hurt like hell, so much so that he could not walk to the hospital, four blocks away. On the ambulance that jolted him up Cary Street, he'd cried out several times.
Hospital conditions were rather like prison conditions: overcrowded. Still, hospital conditions were slightly more conducive to recuperation than prison conditions, so after six weeks*, Nathan's testicular health eventually improved enough that he could be sent back to prison.
